Barbara Berry-Bailey
On April 20, 2013, Rev. Barbara Berry-Bailey, the ELCA Global Mission Staff person for Companion relationships in Africa, will facilitate one of the cross-cultural orientations in preparation for the 2013 trip. This event will be helpful for ANYONE interested in this companion relationship!
Pastor Berry-Bailey visited South Africa in Fall, 2012 along with three of our ELCA Bishops who met with all seven of the ELCSA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa) Diocesan Bishops. She also spent much time with Dr. Phil Knutson, visited the Western Diocese, and saw Dr. Benjamin Molokoe, chair of the Madikwe Circuit Partnership Committee, who led the 2012 visit to the Wisconsin River Valley Conference in our East Central Synod of Wisconsin.
Bishop Ditlhale, who is bishop of the Western Diocese and also the Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa, asked Pastor Berry-Bailey and Dr. Knutson to address the Diocesan Council on the ELCA understanding of accompaniment and to stress the importance of transparency, accountability and the need for orientation and debriefing.
Rev. Barbara Berry-Bailey's recent conversation with Bishop Ditlhale, her meeting with the Western Diocesan Council, and her work with Dr. Phil Knutson will be very helpful in her facilitating the preparation for the 2013 trip to the Western Diocese and for our growing companion relationship.
